On the Importance of Sashing

Carol S.  brought in 3 of her blocks (stunning!) to show off.  Actually, it was to commiserate because she was having difficulty getting the block size (6.5 inches) even after paper piecing a block that the book provided templates for.  The conclusion that Carol arrived at after consulting with Martha was. . .sashing is used to make all our blocks the same size in the end.  Be of good cheer, sashing is our friend.

    if you look in the book, one of the quilts (it's on the left page) has an extra border around every block before it has been set with the sashing. It's got orange sashing and a dark block border but I'm guessing the maker had a similar challenge!

    Carol, they look great! Wendy did 4 of her blocks and they are also lovely. I'm looking forward to start on mine. I need to stop by HIQ and get my Carol Doak Paper for paper piecing.

    I too am having trouble getting mine all to be 6.5. Foundation piecing either using paper or foundation villene I still end up 1/8th of an inch smaller. My machine is going in for a service in a couple of weeks and I will get them to check the tension, this is the only thing I can think of. As it is some will have sashing slightly wider than others!!!
